Origins

A birthday party that became a neighborhood institution.

Function in the Junction was founded in 1985 to celebrate Erskine Hawkins' birthday (July 26) and the musical legacy of Tuxedo Junction. What started as a modest tribute has grown, decade by decade, into Ensley's signature annual gathering , a full-day celebration of Black Birmingham's musical roots and a homecoming for anyone with a connection to this corner of the city.

The park itself has been the festival's home since it was rededicated in Hawkins' honor. Every year the tent poles go up, the sound board wakes up, and the sidewalks fill with friends who haven't seen each other since last July.
